Hello followers, Today I’m going to talk about drawing Schematics with
OrCad. I have already done a blog post on drawing Schematics andPCB designing with dip-trace. If you already have went through it, then you
have an Idea about PCB designing. Today I’m going to talk about schematics
drawing using OrCad software. I will be using OrCad 16.6, installed in Windows
7. It is no matter what is the Operating system you use. But if you are using a
different OrCad version, then there will be little differences, I think you can figure them out.
OrCad is another software which is use for PCB designing. The thing is, it
is somewhat complex than the other softwares. But, if you familiar with OrCad,
then PCB designing is very easy.
So, no more talks, lets start to make a small circuit schematic first as we
done with dip-trace. For the sake, I will draw the same schematic draw on dip-trace.
[01] Opening OrCad
First you need to open the Orcad software. Open `ORCAD Capture OS` to start
the program.
Then you will see OrCad as in following figure.
[02]Starting New Project
Lets start a new project. To start a new project, click on File -> New
-> Project.
Then Give a project name, select the project type, Select a location to
save the project and then click OK.
[03]User Interface
Then you will new windows are open inside the OrCad window. Basically, this
is the interface you are going to use to draw schematics. You can see Project
Manager window, Schematic Drawing Page, Tool Bar and Status bar. Project
Manager window is the place where you can manage you project. Schematic drawing
page is where you are going to draw the schematic. Tool bar is the place that
have all the tools. Status bar show the status of your design.
[04]Start Drawing
Lets start drawing the schematics. To draw the schematics, you need to add components. To add components, Click on Place Part button on Tool Bar.
The you will see a new side window is appear. To add components, First you
need to load the libraries. To do that, select all the libraries on Libraries section.
It is normally appear to be all selected. If you are using OrCad on first time,
then maybe sometimes you may see there are no library. If this happen, then
click on add library button and select the all libraries and add them.
After the libraries are selected, search the needed component and Double
click on the wanted component and place it on the drawing area. You can see the preview of the components on preview area when you select the components on the
Once you place the components, you can edit there properties and orientations by right-click on the placed component and selecting the property
you want to change.
To start wiring, click on the Place Wire button on Tool Bar to enter the
draw wire mode. Then start drawing the wires.
[05]Edit Components Details
In OrCad you can insert the component data while drawing the schematic. To
do that, double click on the component to enter the component details.
When you double click on the component, you will see a table as follow. You
can filter the table as you want.
Remember to add a name for every component PCB Footprint detail. You can
put anything for that section as you like. But try to put a meaning full
name(such as SMD_0803 etc…). If you do not put a name on this section, even
in a one component, you can’t export a layout to start PCB designing. Therefore
just put a name for every component. Also, you can add every detail about component on here. Such as price, data sheet location,etc.
[06]Exporting Layout 
After you have draw the schematics, remember to do a Design rules check. For
that, click on the project name on Project manager window and click on design
rule check button. Then select the rules to check and click OK. Then you can
see the rule checking status on Status bar.
If you have finish drawing the schematics, and you have verify that there
are no errors on design rule check, then lets make a layout to design the PCB
To create the layout, Click on project file on Project manager window, and
click on Create Net-list button. The Create Net-list box will appear.Click on
Layout tab and select the path to save you layout. Then Click on OK to save the
Layout. If you haven’t gave name for Footprints, then you may have some issues.
So always remember to give a footprint name for every component.
So, This is how you can use OrCad to draw a simple schematic drawing. Hope
you have got some idea haw to draw a schematic using OrCad. Now Its time for
PCB designing. Lets take a brake and design the PCB for this schematic in
