Dip Trace is EDA/CAD software for creating schematic diagrams and printed circuit boards. In this blog post, lets discuss about how to draw a Schematics and PCB layout with Dip Trace. 

To build your own PCB layout with Dip Trace, first you need to download the Dip Trace software. You can download Dip Trace free vision form Dip Trace website.

Getting Started

After installing Dip Trace, you can start working out your PCB designing. Before we draw the PCB layout, we have to draw the schematic diagram first. After that we can make the PCB layout form the schematic diagram.

Setup Schematic Capture

To draw the schematic diagram, first open the Dip Trace software. In this tutorial I will be use Dip Trace 3.0v. It is no matter, because the all of all the versions are little bit slimier. 

When you open the Dip Trace software, you will see this kind of dial box first. 

In it, choose Schematic Capture. Then the Schematic designing tool will open.

First we need to set the Titles and sheets. To do that go to File -> Titels and Sheet setup…


Then select ANSI A on Sheet Template drop box.

After that we need to create a title block for create a better drawing. To create a Title Block change the settings as follows.

After creating the Title block on your schematic drawings, you can now add title, name, ect. to your drawing by double clicking on the title block area as shown in the figure.

OK, so far we have now created a schematic drawing area with a title block. Now lets set the grid size. In here, I will select 0.1in of grid size. To select the grid size go to View -> Grid Size.

At this point you have setup your schematic drawing area. In next section lets talk about drawing schematic diagrams.

To draw the schematic Diagram, you need to select the components first. You can easily select components in Dip Trace by first selecting the component category and then selecting the component. However, in Dip Trace we have a problem, which the Dip Trace does not provide the components in alphabetical order. After selecting the component, you can click on the work space and place the component.

To rotate or flip your components on the schematic diagram you can easily right click on your component and then select the needed option as shown in bellow.

So now you can draw the schematic diagrams as explained above. For this tutorial I have drawn a sample schematic diagram as follow.

Editing the components details

To edit the components, you can simply double click on the components you added and then change the properties as follows.

To view the values of the components, you can check on Values on Additional as follows.

Now we have draw the complete schematic diagram. Now we need to verify the diagram. To do that we have to run the verification as follows.

To convert the PCB layout form the schematic, we can do as follow.

At this point, we have convert our schematic diagram into PCB layout. Now we can design the PCB layout with a better arrangement. I will explain that on next tutorial on how to design the PCB layout with Dip Trace.
